International Anti-Corruption Day

International Anti-Corruption Day, observed annually on December 9th, is a United Nations observance raising global awareness of corruption's deeply damaging effects on societies and promoting coordinated international efforts to prevent and combat it in all its forms. The date commemorates the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Corruption by the General Assembly in 2003, the first legally binding international anti-corruption instrument, which established comprehensive measures addressing prevention, criminalization, international cooperation, and asset recovery across the more than 180 countries that have since ratified it. Anti-corruption advocates emphasize the importance of transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement, including protections for whistleblowers, as essential tools for detecting and preventing corrupt practices within both public and private institutions. International Anti-Corruption Day is marked through educational campaigns, policy discussions, and initiatives promoting transparency and government accountability worldwide.
