Halloween

Halloween, celebrated annually on October 31st, is one of the most widely observed cultural holidays in the world, blending ancient Celtic harvest traditions with centuries of evolving customs centered on costumes, candy, and spooky imagery. The holiday's roots trace back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time when it was believed the boundary between the living and spirit worlds grew thin, prompting protective rituals involving bonfires and costumes to ward off wandering spirits. As Christianity spread through Celtic regions, the church established All Saints' Day on November 1st, with October 31st becoming known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween, blending pagan and Christian traditions over subsequent centuries. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween customs to North America in the nineteenth century, where the holiday evolved considerably, incorporating distinctly American elements including trick-or-treating, elaborate costume traditions, and the carving of pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, itself derived from an older Irish tradition using turnips. Modern Halloween celebrations include costume parties, haunted house attractions, horror movie marathons, and the now-massive commercial industry surrounding candy, decorations, and costumes, making it one of the most economically significant secular holidays in the United States. Halloween continues to evolve, with growing popularity of adult costume parties and elaborate home decorating alongside its traditional focus on children trick-or-treating door to door.
