Forefathers' Day

Forefathers' Day, observed on December 22nd, commemorates the landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock in 1620, a New England regional observance with particularly deep historical roots in Massachusetts, where it has been marked in various forms since the eighteenth century. The specific date reflects the Old Style, or Julian calendar, date of the Pilgrims' landing as originally calculated by early New England historians, though subsequent calendar corrections and historical research have led to some ongoing debate about the precise date of the actual landing, contributing to minor regional variations in how and when the observance has historically been marked. The Old Colony Club of Plymouth first formally organized a Forefathers' Day celebration in 1769, using the occasion to honor the Pilgrim settlers' perseverance and to celebrate New England's distinct colonial heritage, a tradition that continued and evolved over subsequent generations, particularly among descendants of the original Mayflower passengers and organizations dedicated to preserving Pilgrim history and genealogy.
