Perhaps most notably, elephants have been extensively documented displaying behaviors suggesting genuine grief and mourning for deceased herd members, including returning to visit the remains of dead elephants and exhibiting behaviors that researchers interpret as expressions of distress and loss, evidence that has significantly influenced broader scientific and public understanding of animal emotional capacity.
