U.S. Coast Guard Birthday

The U.S. Coast Guard Birthday, observed annually on August 4th, commemorates the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790, the precursor to the modern United States Coast Guard. Founded at the urging of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, the original service was created to enforce federal tariff and trade laws along the young nation's coastline, combating smuggling that threatened crucial government revenue in the early republic. Over the following century, the service evolved considerably, merging with the U.S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to form the modern Coast Guard, which took on a broader mission encompassing maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, national defense, and environmental protection. Today the Coast Guard operates as one of the six armed forces of the United States and, uniquely, also functions as a federal law enforcement and regulatory agency under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, transferring to the Department of the Navy during wartime when directed by the president. The Coast Guard's roughly 40,000 active-duty members conduct search-and-rescue operations, ice-breaking missions, and drug interdiction, and provide crucial support during natural disasters such as hurricanes. Each August 4th, Coast Guard installations across the country hold ceremonies, cake-cutting traditions, and other events honoring the branch's history and the service of its members past and present.
