Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve, observed on December 24th, is the evening before Christmas Day, marked worldwide by religious services, family gatherings, and a rich variety of cultural traditions that in many countries and families represent an equally or even more significant celebration than Christmas Day itself. For many Christians, Christmas Eve includes attending a special evening church service, often held at midnight, commemorating the traditional account of Jesus Christ's birth, a practice with roots extending back to early Christian traditions of nighttime vigils preceding major religious feast days. Many European and Latin American countries celebrate their primary Christmas festivities on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day itself, including Germany's tradition of gift-opening on the evening of the 24th and various Scandinavian countries where a substantial festive dinner on Christmas Eve, rather than Christmas Day, serves as the central holiday celebration. The tradition of Santa Claus delivering gifts overnight on Christmas Eve, to be discovered by children on Christmas morning, represents one of the most widespread and enduring aspects of the secular Christmas Eve tradition across English-speaking countries, drawing on the broader Santa Claus mythology that developed significantly during the nineteenth century. Christmas Eve dinner traditions vary enormously by culture, ranging from the Italian "Feast of the Seven Fishes" to various other regional specialties reflecting the particular culinary heritage and religious observances, including fasting traditions, associated with different Christian communities worldwide. Christmas Eve is celebrated through religious services, family dinners, gift-giving traditions, and final preparations for Christmas Day.
