Bastille Day

Bastille Day, observed on July 14th, is France's national day, commemorating the 1789 storming of the Bastille fortress and prison in Paris, an event widely regarded as marking the symbolic beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille, though holding only a handful of prisoners at the time of the attack, had long served as a hated symbol of royal absolutism and arbitrary imprisonment, and its capture by a Parisian crowd seeking weapons and gunpowder represented a dramatic act of popular defiance against King Louis XVI's authority that quickly took on powerful symbolic significance far beyond its immediate military impact.
