Alaska Day

Alaska Day, observed annually on October 18th, commemorates the formal transfer of Alaska from Russian to American control in 1867, marking the culmination of a transaction commonly known as the Alaska Purchase, in which the United States acquired the territory for $7.2 million, an amount widely mocked at the time as "Seward's Folly" after Secretary of State William Seward, who negotiated the deal. Russia's motivation for selling the vast territory stemmed partly from the region's declining profitability following depleted fur seal populations and concerns about defending the remote territory against potential British seizure from neighboring Canada, particularly following Russia's recent costly defeat in the Crimean War. The formal ceremony transferring authority took place in Sitka, Alaska's Russian colonial capital, where the Russian flag was lowered and the American flag raised, though the territory would not achieve statehood for nearly another century, becoming the 49th U.S. state in 1959. Initially viewed by many contemporary Americans as a wasteful expenditure on a remote, seemingly useless frozen wilderness, Alaska's value became dramatically apparent in subsequent decades through significant gold discoveries, followed later by enormous oil reserves that transformed the state into a crucial source of American energy production. Alaska Day is observed primarily within Alaska itself, particularly in Sitka, with historical reenactments, parades, and educational programs commemorating the territorial transfer and its lasting significance to American history.
