World Vegan Day

World Vegan Day, observed annually on November 1st, celebrates veganism, a lifestyle that excludes all animal products, and raises awareness about the potential health, environmental, and ethical benefits associated with fully plant-based living. The observance was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then-president of the Vegan Society in the United Kingdom, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the organization's founding and the coining of the term "vegan" itself by Donald Watson in 1944. Veganism differs from vegetarianism by excluding not only meat but all animal-derived products, including dairy, eggs, and honey, as well as often extending ethical considerations to non-food items like leather and wool. The vegan movement has grown substantially in visibility and mainstream acceptance in recent decades, driven by increasing research into the environmental impact of animal agriculture, growing concern about animal welfare in industrial farming, and expanding availability of plant-based food alternatives in mainstream grocery stores and restaurants. World Vegan Day launches Vegan Month, known as "Veganuary" precursor awareness efforts, encouraging both committed vegans and curious newcomers to explore plant-based eating, whether permanently or through short-term dietary challenges. The observance is marked with educational events, plant-based food sampling, cooking demonstrations, and social media campaigns highlighting vegan recipes and lifestyle resources.
