World Radio Day

World Radio Day, observed February 13th, is an international observance established by UNESCO to celebrate radio as a medium and raise awareness of its continued importance for communication, education, and access to information around the world. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the founding of United Nations Radio on February 13, 1946, one of the earliest international broadcasting efforts by the newly formed UN. UNESCO's General Conference formally adopted World Radio Day in 2011, and the United Nations General Assembly endorsed it as an official UN International Day in 2012, after which it has been observed annually with a different thematic focus each year, often centered on radio's role in areas like disaster response, gender equality in broadcasting, or reaching underserved and remote communities. Despite the rise of television, the internet, and streaming media, radio remains one of the most widely accessible communication technologies worldwide, requiring only an inexpensive receiver and no literacy or reliable internet connection, making it especially vital in regions with limited infrastructure or during emergencies when other networks may be down. On World Radio Day, broadcasters, journalists, and cultural organizations mark the occasion with special programming, panel discussions, and public celebrations of radio's history and ongoing relevance.
