National Yo-Yo Day

National Yo-Yo Day, observed on June 6th, celebrates the classic toy consisting of two connected discs with a string wrapped around an axle, allowing it to spin outward and return to the hand, and is marked on the birthday of Donald F. Duncan, the entrepreneur who popularized the modern yo-yo in the United States. While simple string-and-disc toys resembling yo-yos date back thousands of years, appearing in ancient Greek pottery and Chinese historical records, the modern yo-yo craze traces more directly to the Philippines, where the toy had long been a popular pastime, before Filipino immigrant Pedro Flores introduced it to America in the 1920s, opening a yo-yo manufacturing company in California. Duncan purchased Flores's company and trademark in 1932, and through aggressive marketing, national demonstration tours, and the introduction of the now-iconic slip-string design that enabled advanced tricks like "sleeping," he transformed the yo-yo into a massive nationwide toy craze and cultural phenomenon. Yo-yos have experienced several subsequent waves of renewed popularity over the decades, and competitive yo-yoing has developed into an organized global subculture with dedicated competitions, professional players, and increasingly sophisticated ball-bearing designs enabling elaborate tricks.
