National Beer Day

National Beer Day, observed on April 7th, commemorates the day in 1933 when the Cullen-Harrison Act took effect in the United States, legalizing the sale of beer and wine with an alcohol content of up to 4 percent, effectively ending nearly 13 years of complete alcohol prohibition for beer specifically, months before the full repeal of Prohibition later that year with the ratification of the 21st Amendment. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the act into law shortly after taking office, fulfilling a campaign promise and providing much-needed tax revenue and jobs during the depths of the Great Depression. The night before the law took effect is sometimes referred to as "New Beer's Eve," with crowds gathering outside breweries anticipating the stroke of midnight when legal beer sales could resume. Anheuser-Busch famously commemorated the occasion by sending a team of Clydesdale horses pulling a beer wagon to deliver a case of beer to the White House, a gesture that helped establish the Budweiser Clydesdales as an enduring brand symbol. Today, National Beer Day is celebrated by beer enthusiasts, breweries, and bars across the country, often with special releases, discounted pints, and toasts to the end of Prohibition-era restrictions.
