International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on September 21st and was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 to dedicate a day to strengthening the ideals of peace, both between and within all nations and peoples. Initially observed on the opening day of the UN General Assembly's regular annual session, the observance was later fixed to a specific, unmoving calendar date of September 21st beginning in 2002, allowing for more consistent global observance and planning. The day calls for a global ceasefire and nonviolence, symbolically represented by the ringing of the Peace Bell at UN Headquarters in New York, cast from coins donated by children from around the world and inscribed with the words "Long Live Absolute World Peace." Beyond its symbolic significance, the International Day of Peace serves as a platform for raising awareness about ongoing conflicts, promoting diplomatic and community-based conflict resolution, and highlighting the often-overlooked work of peacebuilders, humanitarian workers, and organizations striving to reduce violence and foster reconciliation in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
