International Day of Non-Violence

The International Day of Non-Violence, observed annually on October 2nd, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote the philosophy and practice of non-violence as a means of achieving social and political change. The date was deliberately chosen to coincide with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence leader whose commitment to non-violent civil disobedience, known as satyagraha, became one of the most influential models of peaceful resistance in modern history and directly inspired numerous subsequent civil rights and independence movements worldwide, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership of the American civil rights movement. Gandhi's philosophy held that non-violent resistance could be a powerful and morally superior tool for confronting injustice and oppressive systems, a principle he applied throughout India's independence struggle against British colonial rule. The observance aims to disseminate the message of non-violence broadly, including through education, and to reinforce global commitment to peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence as guiding principles for resolving conflicts at every level, from interpersonal disputes to international relations. The International Day of Non-Violence is marked worldwide with educational programs, peace-themed events, and public reflections on Gandhi's legacy and the ongoing relevance of non-violent principles in addressing contemporary social and political challenges.
