International Cat Day

International Cat Day celebrates the world's most independent-minded household pet, honoring the estimated 600 million domestic cats that share homes with humans around the globe. Founded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002, the observance was created to raise awareness about cat welfare, encourage adoption from shelters, and highlight the unique bond between cats and their owners. Cats have lived alongside humans for roughly 10,000 years, first drawn to early agricultural settlements to hunt rodents attracted by stored grain. Unlike dogs, cats were never truly domesticated in the same behavioral sense, retaining much of their wild ancestors' independence and instincts.
